Wrong!
Sure, some people go bonkers at the idea of free stuff, but using the word FREE in your emails – especially your email subject line – will land you in spam jail.
Just a warning: trying to get clever with spaces (F R E E ! ! !) won’t help. That’s been done too many times, so the filters know that trick.
Here’s a list of other words that are likely to trigger spam filters:
- Act Now
- Call Now
- Cash
- Chance
- Cheap
- Clearance
- Compare rates
- Discount
Double your
- Earn $
- Full refund
- Get it now
- Increase sales

- Incredible deal
- Lowest price
- Make $
- Miracle
- Money back
- Money Making
- Never
- No cost
- One hundred percent free
- Pennies a day
- Quote
- Sample
- Save big money
- Stock alert
- Success
- US dollars
- While you sleep
There are actually hundreds of words and phases out there that can trigger spam filters. Don’t get frustrated if you feel like there’s nothing you can actually say. Instead try taking a novel approach and ask yourself how you would tell a friend about your sale.
Chances are you’ll step out of sales mode and talk like a human being. So use those same works for your subject line.
