In this episode of 5 Business Rules, Monika Jansen and I offer up five tips to bring some excitement to your email. Spend 4 minutes watching the video or read on for the tips.
Keep it short
Most email is read on mobile devices, so keeping things short and sweet is key. Write a couple sentences to sum up an article and then link to the full post.
Bonus: When your users click on your links, it’s a good way to see what they are interested in, so you can bring more of that content to them.
It’s fun to read
Use humor. Pop in a funny image. Do something that makes your email stand out from the other 100+ emails most people get EVERY day!
It’s filled with valuable information your audience can use
More than anything you want to make sure to talk to your audience instead of at them.
Your emails should not be a broadcast of your latest success. Good email marketing is about speaking to your users about the things they are interested in.
In an ideal world you can serve both purposes: reminding users you’re a subject matter expert with things to teach them, but you do it in a way that is interesting and consumable to your audience.
Use visuals
Never forget, a picture is worth a thousand words, so make sure your email contains beautiful images.
Images help break up the text, making it easier to read, and can help you promote specific parts of your email by drawing the eye.
Take feedback and use analytics
Again, your newsletters aren’t really about you. They’re about engaging your audience and thus they should be filled with things likely to interest your audience.
Look at your metrics and gain an understanding of what people have responded to in past newsletters, and then plan your future newsletters around similar content.
Look at metrics including open rate and click rate, and be sure to notice trends. If your normal open rate is 25%, but you have one email that shoots up to 50%, figure out what made that one different and do more.
On the flip side if you had one email with an open rate of 10%, never do that again!
