The average website visit is 8 seconds long. Think about how long that is and how much information you can communicate in that time. It’s not much.
If you want to keep people on your website, you must make a strong first impression with your homepage. That starts with a strong visual impact.
In this episode of 5 Business Rules, Monika Jansen and I cover five tips to help you wow your audience.
#1 Focus on your clients
As small business owners, we care deeply about our own businesses, but the truth is everything you say should be focused on your clients and what they care about.
How will you make their life better, or their work day easier? Focus your messaging on what you can do for them.
#2 Write a headline that pulls people in
Your headline will be the first thing web visitors read, so use it to make an impact.
Stay focused on your clients when you’re writing this line. What is the one thing you want them to know about your service? How can you help them? What difference will working with you make?
# 3 Clearly explain what you do
Make it quick and easy for someone to understand what you do.
We like to use the grandma test. In other words, how would you explain to your grandma what you do? Craft a few simple sentences that would allow Grandma to understand your service and the benefits of working with you.
#4 Highlight your top selling products or services
Use your homepage to call attention to the products or services your clients will be most interested in. And make it easy for them to buy.
#5 Lead with a strong visual
We’ve talked about the importance of having strong, client-focused messaging on your homepage, but the truth is no one will read your message unless you’ve interested them visually.
Use a striking image. Don’t be afraid of bold colors and unique typography to help you stand out. People will make snap judgements about your business based on how your website looks.
