If you’re wondering if I’m aware of the fact that I named my blog after an old soap opera, the answer is yes. In fact, The Guiding Light was my mom’s favorite soap opera so I know all about Reva, Josh and the Spaulding Family.
Now if you’re wondering why, there is the aspect of shamelessly plugging into Google searches and hashtags that may expose me to a wider audience that didn’t originally intend to view my blog…but more so I am a marketing pro that shamelessly loves lame metaphors. I shall explain.
When I launched Social Light back in 2009 I was a consultant focused on social media. After hours of brainstorming with my husband we landed on the name Social Light (he still claims to have been the brainchild). The name was of course meant to be a play on a socialite, or a social butterfly blended into the social media theme well.
Next came the tagline: Guiding Your Online Presence. Metaphorically my company would be a source of wisdom, lighting the way through the dark chaos of social media. I know it’s a bit dramatic, but what can you do.
Fast forward five years. Social media has definitely reached saturation and is common place for most people, but it’s arguably more muddled than ever. Social Light has also expanded from a solo shop to an agency that provides digital services including web development, multimedia and SEO, thus my job continues to be advising people on how to navigate their way through the internet.
While my ego isn’t quite so big as to state that this blog is THE source of wisdom that will make the internet a friendlier place, you should pick up some useful nuggets and hopefully we’ll have a good time doing it. If it also inspires you to think that you’d like to work with Social Light someday, that would indeed make me a happy girl.
